As a Bainbridge High School alumni and local, I always get a sense of excitement during homecoming week.  I get to live vicariously through my sophomore son, much to his dismay, I’m sure.  The positive energy of the week and all the activities are so much fun!

Monday was neon day…as an 80’s gal myself, I find this to be strangely funny. Maybe my mom felt the same way when we declared one of our homecoming days “50’s day”.  Tuesday was “farmer day”, Wednesday “senior citizen” day, Thursday “would you still be my friend if I looked like this” day and of course the culmination traditional Friday is “Spartan spirit day”…a classic.

It has been the highlight of my day, as my son has driven me to BHS (he’s permitted to drive now and yes, I finally have a chauffer ), each morning admiring all the creativity of the high schoolers and their get ups.  Not surprisingly, it’s mostly the girls that partake in these spirited dress up rituals, but occasionally I’ll see a young man showing some great school spirit as well.  But the pride I felt this morning watching my own young man courageously enter BHS in a pair of butterfly wings, tutu and headband made me want to break out the old cheer leading outfit and start a flash mob to the Spartan fight song, old school style!  Of course I didn’t, but the thought did cross my mind and yes, I can still get into that uniform. I observed confident girls walking to school wearing their undergarments outside of their clothes, others sporting rainbow fro’s, and crazy get-ups.  As I drove away, I had such a sense of pride!

I love seeing the youth on our island stepping out of the box, throwing caution to the wind, not fitting in and owning it, all in the guise of school spirit.  Now that’s good clean fun!

I can hardly wait to be driven to BHS tomorrow and observe all the Spartan spirit that’s surely to be a large haze of blue and gold.  Well done kids, I applaud your bravery, have fun, make good choices this weekend and know you’ve made this 1986 BHS alumni very proud!  Go SPARTAN’S…GO, FIGHT, WIN!!
